I have noticed how quiet international students are, especially when there are native speakers of English in the same class! When I ask students outside class why they don’t speak more they tell me two things: that they are not confident in their English, and that they don’t think anyone wants to hear what they have to say! It is important that international students understand that if they don’t try to fully participate in classes and tutorials the teacher is likely to think either that they don’t understand, or they are not interested! This means that international students need to prepare for classes/tutorials by thinking about the topic beforehand and getting ready to take part in the session. There are some excellent ideas on how you should go about doing this here at Monash University.
Many regular readers and responders are teachers. Would it be a good idea to have a forum to share teaching ideas on EAP?

Goodness me, we haven’t had a winter like this one since 1981! Snow is covering the whole of the United Kingdom…except where I live – which is why I suppose it is called ‘the English Riviera’! Of course the country has ground to a halt as usual, which gives people a good excuse for not getting back to work properly after the holiday!
People are always asking for examples of websites where they can listen to people speaking and see the transcript, so here’s another one. This one, called dotSUB, is very impressive. There are a few really good things about this site. Firstly, there are some great videos to watch and enjoy and improve your English as you listen. (Listen without reading the transcript the first time, and then refer to the transcript to help you with the bits you had difficulty with.) As well as watching other people’s videos you can upload your own, and add subtitles to them. You can can also embed the videos into any webpages that you want very easily – which teachers will like.
You can see a video from the site here: (or visit the homepage at dotSUB here).

Yes, it has been ages since the last post. I hope you have been enjoying some time off over the holiday period. If you celebrated Christmas then I hope you had a lovely time and happy new year to everyone!
New year is the time to make resolutions. My New Year’s Resolution is to work harder on English for University. Com to try and make it as useful as possible to readers, and for that I need your help. One new development is the series of English for University. Com Study Guides that I have started. The newest one of these is the first of the One Page Study Guides which has been designed to be printed out and stuck on your wall so you can easily look at it when you are working. Please provide feedback on the guides which you can access here.
Glad you found it useful!
Great link! I'm forwarding it to all my students.Thank you again!
