Data is or data are?

The word ‘data’ is used with both singular and plural verbs so:

The data is = is correct

The data are = is correct.

Some people will tell you that ONLY ‘the data are‘ is correct. This is because the word data is a Latin word and in Latin it is a plural verb. But in English usage both are common.
