IELTS: Speaking

Information about the speaking part of the IELTS exam

The speaking part of the test lasts for between 11 and 14 minutes.

There are three main parts to the interview:

Part 1: The interviewer checks your identity and asks you a few questions on some easy everyday topics such as hobbies, family or food. This part of the test takes 4 - 5 minutes.

Part 2: You will be given a card with a topic on it. You have 1 minute to prepare to talk about this topic for a minute or two. This part of the test takes 3 - 4 minutes.

Part 3: The interviewer will have a discussion with you about some of the points you made in part 2. This part of the test takes 4 - 5 minutes.
