Robberies in Worksham January - August 2008

Sample answer:

The graph shows the number of robberies which took place in Worksham between the months of January and August 2008. It can be seen that in the first few months of the year the number of robberies increased, there was a peak in the middle of this period after which the rate decreased.

In January the number of robberies stood at 200. This figure rose very slightly over the next month before rising to 400 in March. Between March and April there was a sharp increase in the number of robberies to a high of 1000 in April. After April the trend was downwards. Initially, there was a steady fall of about 100 a month to a figure of 800 in June. After June the fall was more dramatic with the figure finally falling to approximately 50 in August.

In conclusion, the graph shows that robberies were increasingly common until the middle of the year but since then the number has been brought under control and finished at the lowest point in the period.

Examining the sample answer

You can see there are three paragraphs.

Paragraph 1: The Introduction

The graph shows the number of robberies which took place in Worksham between the months of January and August 2008. It can be seen that in the first few months of the year the number of robberies increased, there was a peak in the middle of this period after which the rate decreased.

In the first paragraph there are two sentences:

Sentence 1: an introduction saying what the graph shows, giving information about the dates and the place without just copying from the graph!

Sentence 2: a summary giving an overview of the shape of the graph and its main features

Paragraph 2: The Main Body

In January the number of robberies stood at 200. This figure rose very slightly over the next month before rising to 400 in March. Between March and April there was a sharp increase in the number of robberies to a high of 1000 in April. After April the trend was downwards. Initially, there was a steady fall of about 100 a month to a figure of 800 in June. After June the fall was more dramatic with the figure finally falling to approximately 50 in August.

In the second paragraph there are a number of  sentences which give the details of the graph in a logical order. This is done with a range of vocabulary. You may not be able to give all the details, but give the trends, that is the main directions and where and how the changes are.

Paragraph 3: The Conclusion

In conclusion, the graph shows that robberies were increasingly common until the middle of the year but since then the number has been brought under control and finished at the lowest point in the period.

In the third paragraph there are one or two sentences which summarise the report.
